The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Thomas: D.

Somebody took the 49ers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.

The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They will need Ulofoshio to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Thomas pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

In Round 1, Pick 15 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.

In the 32nd overall pick they get juice off the edge, and a steal at that.

They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in slot 64, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.

Zak Zinter at the 95th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.

The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 98 on Cade Stover with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.

Edefuan Ulofoshio at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.

Frank Gore Jr. at pick 177 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.

Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 253 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
