The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Gould: D-. The board owed the 49ers one, and it paid up: Anthony Gould, the No. 142 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 31 like a gift left on the doorstep. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The 49ers indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback and edge rusher stayed open.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
A clean, defensible pick in the 13th overall pick with a little surplus value in Olumuyiwa Fashanu. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick35
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in Round 2, Pick 3, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick44
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan at pick No. 63 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick124
Rnd4
Cam Hart
They robbed the room for Cam Hart here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick131
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and edge rusher to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick133
Rnd4
James Williams
Quietly one of the better values of the day, James Williams at the Round 4 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick176
Rnd6
Beau Brade
Circle this one: Beau Brade at the 176th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick211
Rnd6
Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube at Round 6, Pick 36 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick215
Rnd6
Dallin Holker
A tight end of that caliber at the 215th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick251
Rnd7
Anthony Gould
You do not let a wide receiver like Anthony Gould reach the 251st overall pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
