Grand theft in Round 6, Pick 40: the 49ers steal McCaffrey and grade out a B. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Luke McCaffrey fell into the Round 6 slot. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Raym has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick64
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
The board had cheaper options than Xavier Legette at the 64th overall pick, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Renardo Green
Renardo Green in pick No. 94 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick124
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at pick 124 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
They paid sticker price for Jarrian Jones in slot 131, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick139
Rnd5
Christian Jones
They did well to land Christian Jones in No. 139, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick176
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
They reached a country mile for Andrew Raym at the 176th pick, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick211
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
By-the-book stuff, Nathaniel Watson at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
The board fumbled Luke McCaffrey all the way to pick 215, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick222
Rnd7
Richard Jibunor
A wild overpay on Richard Jibunor in No. 222, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick232
Rnd7
C.J. Hanson
C.J. Hanson at slot 232 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in Round 7, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
