FutureB-
The 49ers let Torrence fall into their laps, and walked away with a D-. The 49ers did not so much draft Luke McCaffrey as overpay for him, 55 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
That Torrence pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 17th pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at pick 34 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Luke McCaffrey
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Luke McCaffrey well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Chau Smith-Wade
No drama and no debate, Chau Smith-Wade went about where he belonged in pick No. 124. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick131
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
They took Roger Rosengarten at par in pick 131, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
They reached a country mile for Jaheim Bell at slot 133, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick137
Rnd5
Beau Brade
A tidy little value on Beau Brade in pick No. 137, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick176
Rnd6
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd at the 176th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 40 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick251
Rnd7
Ro Torrence
Ro Torrence in No. 251 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
