FutureA
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the C+ tells the story. The rest of the league had time to spare on Jaylen Harrell; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 76 spots ahead at pick 131. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
Getting McGlothern where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie at pick No. 63 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Javon Foster. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Josh Newton
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at No. 124 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick133
Rnd4
Khristian Boyd
Khristian Boyd at Round 4, Pick 33 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in the 176th pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Steal is underselling it; Dwight McGlothern at No. 211 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at Round 6, Pick 40 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They jumped the gun on Joshua Cephus, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
