FutureB-
The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Sam Hartman a full 40 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Cooper value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Edgerrin Cooper at the 63rd pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick97
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson in No. 97 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick124
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 124, where Sataoa Laumea graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones in Round 4, Pick 31 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick133
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in slot 133, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
Nice patience on Jase McClellan, who had no business lasting to slot 211. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
No edge and no loss on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in pick 215; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick218
Rnd6
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick251
Rnd7
LaDarius Henderson
They took LaDarius Henderson at par in No. 251, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
