FutureB-
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. The rest of the league had time to spare on DeMonte Capehart; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 60 spots ahead at the Round 6 slot.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, tight end and other spots. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick46
Rnd2
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie at slot 46 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick64
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in pick No. 64 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving at the 68th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
They reached into another round for Kris Abrams-Draine, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick98
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
A reach on Leonard Taylor III in pick 98; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick103
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in Round 4, Pick 3 leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
Pick117
Rnd4
James Williams
A reach for James Williams in the 117th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cam Hart
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Cam Hart while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick177
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They left a pile of value on the table to take Christian Jones this early at pick 177. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick210
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
A big swing on Matthew Jones at pick No. 210, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Xavier Thomas. It fills a real need, too.
Pick215
Rnd6
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at No. 215 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick253
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
They reached a country mile for Ryan Flournoy at slot 253, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
