Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueC- NeedB TradesB FutureD
The 49ers drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: C+.

The Mase Funa selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 158 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They banked enough surplus on Vaki to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a long-term answer under center, though they paid up to get him.
Pick94 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in No. 94. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick124 Rnd4 Christian Jones
They paid up for Christian Jones at slot 124 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick131 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
A premium they did not need to pay, Tommy Eichenberg a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick133 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
A reach on Luke McCaffrey in the 133rd overall pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick176 Rnd6 Sione Vaki
The board fumbled Sione Vaki all the way to pick 176, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick211 Rnd6 Julian Pearl
Julian Pearl in slot 211 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Mase Funa
Mase Funa in pick No. 215 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick251 Rnd7 Trajan Jeffcoat
They talked themselves into Trajan Jeffcoat at the 251st pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
