FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Jaylen Harrell a full 32 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Getting Jackson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ruke Orhorhoro. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Maason Smith at slot 94 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher in Round 4, Pick 24 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Josh Newton
A slide stopped in the 131st pick, with Josh Newton worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick133
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten at the 133rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jha'Quan Jackson
The board fumbled Jha'Quan Jackson all the way to the 204th overall pick, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A premium they did not need to pay, Gabe Hall a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid up for Frank Gore Jr. at pick 215 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick219
Rnd6
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy slipping to pick No. 219 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at the Round 7 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
