FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Cornelius Johnson in pick 146.
Rosemy-Jacksaint at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Melton
The board had cheaper options than Max Melton at pick 63, and it noticed. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick94
Rnd3
Austin Booker
Austin Booker is a better player than pick No. 94 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
They jumped the gun on Blake Fisher, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Christian Jones
They paid up for Christian Jones at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in slot 133 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Khristian Boyd. The roster fit checks out.
Pick146
Rnd5
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
They left a pile of value on the table to take Curtis Jacobs this early at pick 176. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
This one needs a full-page explanation: Josh Proctor in the 211th overall pick, miles early. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick215
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
They paid sticker price for Javontae Jean-Baptiste in No. 215, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick222
Rnd7
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Steal is underselling it; Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at slot 222 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick253
Rnd7
Aaron Casey
They reached a country mile for Aaron Casey at the 253rd pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
