Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB+
The 49ers let Carson fall and pounced. Final grade: D.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the 49ers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. Put together, it is a D.

That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The 49ers indulged a want in Carson while a need in wide receiver, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Reaching for Spann-Ford left real value on the table behind him.

The Carson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In the 17th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick48 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at No. 48 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at Round 2, Pick 31 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine in slot 94 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick111 Rnd4 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo in pick 111 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in pick No. 114 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121 Rnd4 Caelen Carson
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Caelen Carson while clear needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Pick131 Rnd4 Chau Smith-Wade
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 131 on Chau Smith-Wade, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick145 Rnd5 Isaiah Adams
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah Adams in Round 5, Pick 9. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176 Rnd6 Dillon Johnson
Dillon Johnson is a better player than the 176th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211 Rnd6 Jaden Crumedy
They liked Jaden Crumedy enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 211. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Myles Murphy
The board had cheaper options than Myles Murphy at the 215th pick, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick233 Rnd7 Brevyn Spann-Ford
A premium they did not need to pay, Brevyn Spann-Ford a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick251 Rnd7 Edefuan Ulofoshio
Value with a capital V on Edefuan Ulofoshio in pick 251, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
