The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent the 131st pick on Jaylen Harrell, a name most had 76 spots down the list. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They banked enough surplus on Ulofoshio to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ruke Orhorhoro this early at the 35th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They liked Sedrick Van Pran enough to skip the value, taking him in the 63rd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
The board had Mike Sainristil higher than Round 3, Pick 27, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
They talked themselves into Javon Foster at pick No. 94, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at slot 131 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Pick133
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
A reach for Luke McCaffrey in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in pick No. 162 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Value said wait; Frank Gore Jr. in slot 176 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A premium they did not need to pay, Gabe Hall a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick253
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They went early on Joshua Cephus in pick 253, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick256
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Circle this one: Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 256th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
