You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Trotter Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots. That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at the 22nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 18 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at linebacker with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots open.
Theo Johnson at the 120th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kamal Hadden in the 171st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 210 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
