Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Wiley should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a C-.

Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.

The Wiley steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The cost of the Eboigbe reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.

So much rides on Joe Alt that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Joe Alt
Joe Alt in the 3rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick34 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at pick No. 34, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick71 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in slot 71. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
By-the-book stuff, Braelon Allen at No. 103 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick105 Rnd4 Maason Smith
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Maason Smith. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in pick 106, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick126 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara in the 126th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick129 Rnd4 Justin Eboigbe
They reached into another round for Justin Eboigbe, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick137 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in slot 137 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick147 Rnd5 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick180 Rnd6 Tip Reiman
Tip Reiman at Round 6, Pick 5 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick181 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
They took Cornelius Johnson at par in pick 181, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick221 Rnd7 Joe Milton III
Circle this one: Joe Milton III at the 221st pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick231 Rnd7 Jared Wiley
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 231 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
