This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Myles Jones, the No. 204 name on the board, stolen at No. 227. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They will need Steele to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joe Alt. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
In pick 27 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A reach on Byron Murphy II in the 35th pick; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 3, Pick 2 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A tidy little value on Javon Bullard in the 71st overall pick, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Christian Mahogany is a better player than pick 90 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Leonard Taylor III in pick No. 104; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Kamal Hadden in slot 133; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jordan Travis at No. 140 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Austin Stogner at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Carson Steele in pick 225 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Myles Jones at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
