Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
Burton should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jermaine Burton got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at Round 3, Pick 31. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Jones pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, tight end and other spots still on the board.

The Eboigbe reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Quinyon Mitchell
In the 32nd overall pick they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick64 Rnd2 Kiran Amegadjie
They read the board right and Kiran Amegadjie was the payoff at slot 64. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Jermaine Burton
Taking Jermaine Burton in No. 94 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick95 Rnd3 Justin Eboigbe
Justin Eboigbe in pick No. 95 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick98 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick132 Rnd4 Jarrian Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jarrian Jones while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick133 Rnd4 Keith Randolph Jr.
They talked themselves into Keith Randolph Jr. at the 133rd pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick176 Rnd6 Javon Baker
A reach on Javon Baker in pick 176; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick209 Rnd6 Marcellas Dial
They will replay Marcellas Dial at pick No. 209 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick210 Rnd6 Gabe Hall
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabe Hall. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214 Rnd6 Jalen Berger
No drama and no debate, Jalen Berger went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick215 Rnd6 Hunter Nourzad
A wild overpay on Hunter Nourzad in the 215th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249 Rnd7 Maurice Smith
They took Maurice Smith at par in No. 249, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
