Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
Maye is the Patriots' new face under center. Grade: B.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

Every board in the league had Tupuola-Fetui lower, and that gap is the story. However the rest shakes out, Wilson at that price is a win they earned. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

The Tampa pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and safety. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In the 8th pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Pick25 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick34 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Good price on Xavier Legette in pick No. 34, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick39 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick41 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in No. 41 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick47 Rnd2 Ja'Lynn Polk
They went early on Ja'Lynn Polk in the 47th overall pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
They took Ja'Tavion Sanders at par in pick 49, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick57 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
They talked themselves into Sedrick Van Pran at slot 57, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68 Rnd3 T.J. Tampa
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, T.J. Tampa adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and safety untouched.
Pick103 Rnd4 Marist Liufau
Value with a capital V on Marist Liufau in the 103rd overall pick, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick109 Rnd4 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at Round 4, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139 Rnd5 Roman Wilson
You do not let a wide receiver like Roman Wilson reach pick No. 139 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick182 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Frank Gore Jr. at pick 182 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick224 Rnd7 Brevyn Spann-Ford
By-the-book stuff, Brevyn Spann-Ford at No. 224 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick232 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
