You could see the war room lean forward. Dallin Holker at slot 190 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Matt Goncalves at slot 116 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Sataoa Laumea was the payoff at pick 130. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Malik Mustapha in Round 5, Pick 20 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in No. 166, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Jefferson at the 179th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tight end of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Rouse in the 196th pick, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
