Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Texans: B-.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the Texans shredded theirs for Julius Welschof. He came off 131 spots early, and the room will hear about it.

The Legette pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 JC Latham
JC Latham at the 23rd overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick59 Rnd2 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick85 Rnd3 Xavier Legette
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Legette at pick No. 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick124 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 24 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
A reach for Sione Vaki in pick 128; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick161 Rnd5 Gabe Hall
A real head-scratcher, Gabe Hall in slot 161 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick236 Rnd7 Julius Welschof
Value said wait; Julius Welschof in Round 7, Pick 16 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at the 245th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
