Florida State Rebuilds Again as a Scalding Seat Awaits Mike Norvell
Florida State stumbled to a 5-7 finish (2-6 ACC), a year removed from a 2-10 collapse that ranked among the worst seasons in program history, and the fallout has left Mike Norvell on a scalding seat entering his seventh year in Tallahassee. Norvell reclaimed play-calling duties following the retirement of coordinator Gus Malzahn, leaned on new general manager John Garrett to churn through roughly 50 newcomers, and once again opens the fall breaking in a fresh starting quarterback while rebuilding the entire offensive line for a second straight season. He has flashed at times but remained inconsistent, and with DJ Uiagalelei and Tommy Castellanos combining for just five wins the previous two seasons, the preseason consensus is that FSU is still searching for its first hit under center. Redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry, who completed 71 percent in three brief appearances, is the top backup, with Lafayette transfer Dean DeNobile added for depth.
There is no shortage of talent around the quarterback. Duce Robinson is the headliner, a 6-6, 230-pound target coming off a 1,081-yard, six-touchdown season at 19.3 yards per catch who earned first-team All-America recognition and passed up an early jump to the NFL to return for his senior year. He and Micahi Danzy could develop into one of the country's best receiver duos; Danzy, the ACC's 400-meter champion, offers track-star explosiveness and averaged better than 21 yards a catch on 571 yards. Jayvan Boggs adds a rotational piece, and Devin Carter, the son of former Seminole and NFL standout Dexter Carter, was the most impressive freshman of the spring after a huge high school career. Tight end Landen Thomas returns as a proven pass catcher, giving this group a case as one of the ACC's deepest receiving corps.
The backfield may be the offense's true strength. Quintrevion Wisner transfers in from Texas, where he ran for 1,064 yards and caught 44 passes in 2024 and totaled 1,661 rushing yards at 4.7 per carry over his final two seasons. He fronts a three-man rotation alongside Ousmane Kromah, who averaged 5.7 yards a pop as a true freshman, and Samuel Singleton Jr., who ran for 360 yards at 7.1 per attempt. Expect plenty of two-back looks from a group that should give defenses fits.
For the second year in a row FSU must replace every starter up front, a daunting reset given the unit's struggles in recent seasons. Left tackle Xavier Chaplin is the anchor and the prospect to watch, a veteran of 25 starts at Virginia Tech who also started at Auburn and carries genuine NFL potential. Guard Andre' Otto is the lone holdover Seminole projected to start, joined by Auburn transfer center Bradyn Joiner, senior right guard Nate Pabst and right tackle Chimdia Nwaiwu, a first-team all-Southland pick from Stephen F. Austin. The five imported transfers give the line 107 combined starts, but the chemistry will take time to come together.
Defense
Second-year coordinator Tony White runs a multiple 3-3-5, and his front sorely misses massive nose tackle Darrell Jackson, a fourth-round NFL draft pick. The rebuild centers on Mandrell Desir, a Freshman All-American who posted 6.5 sacks and, along with twin brother Darryll, flirted with transferring before staying put. Nose tackle Daniel Lyons has grown into a leader in the middle, Western Kentucky transfer Deante McCray adds size, and Deamontae Diggs returns after an injury cost him nine games. The pass rush is the question: Texas A&M transfer Rylan Kennedy, the only edge added through the portal, drew praise in the spring, and prized junior college rusher Jalen Anderson arrives from Pearl River to bolster the group.
The linebacker corps looks like the defense's backbone. Chris Jones, a Southern Miss transfer, ranked seventh nationally at 10.3 tackles per game with 133 stops and first-team all-conference honors, while North Carolina transfer Mikai Gbayor brings prior experience playing under White at Nebraska. Seniors Blake Nichelson, who added 6.5 tackles for loss, and Omar Graham Jr., a 60-tackle producer, both return, giving the middle of the defense proven, experienced depth.
Cornerback Ja'Bril Rawls is a crucial piece after picking off four passes in just seven games before a season-ending injury. Ashlynd Barker shifts to rover, where the Seminoles need the 48-tackle, 3.5-sack playmaker to be an enforcer over the middle. Quindarrius Jones and Charles Lester III return on the perimeter, Illinois State transfer CJ Richard adds a ballhawk who logged two interceptions, and Ma'Khi Jones provides snaps at safety. Three portal additions should push the secondary back toward the top of the ACC.
The kicking game was overhauled after a rough 2025. Oklahoma State transfer Gabe Panikowski takes over at placekicker on the strength of a 15-for-15 field goal season at Idaho State in 2024, and New Mexico transfer Daniel Hughes, a Ray Guy Award semifinalist who averaged 43 net yards, handles the punting. North Dakota State long-snapper Caleb Bowers rounds out the specialists. The return game is intriguing, with dynamic options in Singleton, Danzy, Jasen Lopez and Carter, and a unit that bottomed out a year ago is positioned to climb.
Overview and Prediction
The schedule does Norvell no favors. Florida State hosts SMU on Labor Day before traveling to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the slate includes multiple road trips plus rivalry dates with Miami, Clemson, NC State and Florida. The preseason consensus slots the Seminoles around 11th in the ACC and just outside the national top 45, a projection built on real playmakers surrounded by heavy uncertainty. The optimistic read is that FSU was better than its record last fall, with several close, one-score losses and a positive yardage margin in conference play despite the 2-6 mark.
The talent at receiver, running back and linebacker is legitimate, and Robinson and Wisner give the skill positions a genuine draft-caliber core. The verdict comes down to two make-or-break questions: whether Daniels can finally be the answer at quarterback and whether a line stitched together from transfers can protect him. Get those right and Florida State pushes back into bowl contention and buys Norvell time. Get them wrong, and this looks like a coach out of chances.
