Draft Profile: Bio
Zachary Carter totaled 149 tackles. He averaged 7.1 tackles a game, 14 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and 13 quarterback hurries during his sophomore and junior years at high school. He was graded a four-star recruit and was the third-ranked defensive end prospect in the nation. Carter was given scholarship offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson but ultimately accepted an invitation to join FSU.

After redshirting his 2017 year Carter saw action in nine games in 2018 as a reserve defensive lineman and key special teams player. He totaled eight tackles, one tackle-for-loss, two pass breakups, and a quarterback hurry.
As a sophomore in 2019, he appeared in all 13 games and made two starts on the defensive line. He chalked up 31 tackles and finished tied for second on the squad with career-highs in sacks (4.5) and tackles-for-loss (7.0).

Carter broke out in 2020 after nailing down a starting role - he took part in all 12 games and started at defensive tackle in 11. He logged 36 tackles (13 solo) and led the Gators with 5 sacks and 9.5 tackles-for-loss, he also added a fumble return for a touchdown.

In 2021 as a senior Carter was awarded with starts at defensive tackle in all twelve games. He made 14 tackles, 16 stops, had 7 sacks, added 29 total QB pressures, and as a result was invited to take part in the Senior Bowl at season's end.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Good athlete with decent testing numbers for a DT - strong and versatile enough to play all along the defensive line
  • Provides a significant pass rush from the interior but will be more dominant as a traditional DE in 3-4 set
  • Has impressive upper body strength and effectively uses his powerful hands to control linemen
  • Has good arm length which gives him an edge as a pass rusher
  • Maintains excellent leverage and effectively gets under the pads of blockers
  • Has fast hands and displays some explosiveness as a pass rusher
  • High football IQ who has a number of well developed pass-rushing moves
  • Faces double-team and holds the line. Stays alive against the run and mobile quarterbacks, shedding to either side to chase.
  • Adequate change-of-direction agility and straight-line speed to contain.
  • Strong tackler. Has good power in hands and can anchor, shed, and chase.
  • Flashes an explosive burst and can surprise better overall athletes with his ability to get upfield. Has a closing burst when given a free lane. Has the frame to consider moving inside
  • Challenges inside with quickness and strong hands. Run-and-chase defender who can leave a mark.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Isn't always fluid in his movements and is sometimes unable to keep blockers away from his pads
  • A bit of a tweener - may be too small to be an interior run stuffer and not explosive enough to be an outside edge rusher
  • Quick first step with fluid movements off the ball. Highly competitive and fierce, showing relentless effort to the pocket with a nonstop motor
  • Undersized and lacks elite bulk and girth for an interior defensive lineman - will be scheme-specific in the NFL.
  • Good strength, though his marginal arm length limits his ability to grab hold of ballcarriers as they run by.
  • Must improve hand use and read-and-react skills. Lacks the violent hands to shed and can be eliminated by double-team blocks.
  • Lacks a stout anchor and can be redirected off the snap with an underwhelming base strength.
Scouting Report: Summary
Zachary Carter is a decent pro prospect who offers a high floor and a limited ceiling. He is a good but not a great athlete who has consistently performed at a high level at FSU. Carter is undersized for an interior lineman at 282lbs and may struggle to hold up in the run game at the next level, he, however, is a natural inside pass rusher and has the versatility to play all along the defensive line. We imagine he could quickly become part of an effective NFL rotation - playing inside on passing downs and moving outside on base downs and as a result expect to see him as a fourth or fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
