Draft Profile: Bio
A small-school success story turned SEC standout, Torricelli Simpkins III carved an unconventional path to draft relevancy. After dominating at North Carolina Central where he collected MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year honors and All-America recognition, Simpkins bet on himself with a transfer to South Carolina for his final season. The gamble paid off - he started all 13 games at right guard for the Gamecocks in 2024, earning Third-Team All-SEC honors while allowing just two sacks across 939 snaps. The 6'5", 319-pound mauler made an immediate impact in the SEC, highlighted by back-to-back SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week performances against Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. Against the Aggies, he posted an 88% grade with six pancakes, then followed it up with an even more impressive 93% grade and 11 knockdowns against the Commodores. His dominance at the FCS level translated seamlessly to Power 5 competition, as he finished 2024 with South Carolina's highest offensive line efficiency rating at 98.4.
Prior to his SEC arrival, Simpkins was a model of consistency and excellence at NC Central, starting all 35 games over three seasons. His 2022 campaign was particularly noteworthy - he anchored an offense that led the MEAC in every statistical category while personally recording 81 pancake blocks (6.8 per game) en route to helping NC Central capture the HBCU National Championship.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Elite pass protection fundamentals - consistently maintains vertical set and keeps defenders on his front shoulder with excellent patience
- Outstanding anchor ability against power rushers - drops his hips and absorbs bull rushes without giving ground
- Advanced hand usage in pass pro - quick reset ability and excellent placement allow him to control defenders through entire reps
- Exceptional mental processing of stunts and twists - communicates well and passes off defenders seamlessly
- Rare recovery skills when initially beaten - shows mobility and balance to redirect and maintain pocket integrity
- Iron grip strength once locked on - defenders rarely disengage once he establishes initial control
- Maintains consistent pad level in pass sets - doesn't rise up or lose leverage against skilled rushers
- Outstanding durability evidenced by 48 consecutive starts - reliable availability through multiple levels of competition
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Below average explosion off the ball in run game - struggles to generate movement against skilled defensive tackles
- Limited ability to adjust in space on pulls and screens - straight-line athlete who lacks agility to hit moving targets
- Run blocking technique needs complete overhaul - relies on mass over leverage and often loses point of attack
- Fails to sustain run blocks through completion - defenders too often shed late to make plays
- Tendency to bend at waist in run game leads to whiffed blocks - poor pad level nullifies his natural strength
Scouting Report: Summary
Simpkins projects as an intriguing developmental prospect whose elite pass protection skills give him immediate value in passing situations. His ability to stonewall rushers and handle complex protection schemes will attract teams looking for depth in pass-heavy offenses. The stark contrast in his game presents an interesting evaluation challenge. His excellence in pass protection shows starter-level traits, while his run game limitations and athletic profile suggest a more limited role initially. His best fit will be with a pass-first team that can scheme around his run-game limitations while maximizing his outstanding ability to protect the quarterback.
Smart teams will recognize the value of his elite pass-protection traits despite his run game deficiencies. In an increasingly pass-heavy league, his ability to keep quarterbacks clean could earn him playing time early while he develops his run-blocking technique. His ceiling will be determined by whether he can develop adequate run blocking skills to complement his already pro-ready pass protection.
