Draft Profile: Bio
Tanner McLachlan, originally from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, began his collegiate football career at Southern Utah University. He redshirted in 2018 and participated in a total of 11 games from 2019 to 2020, accumulating modest statistics. His college journey was disrupted by a torn ACL in 2021, which sidelined him for the entire season. Following his recovery, McLachlan transferred to the University of Arizona, where he quickly secured a scholarship and began playing in 2022. Over two seasons at Arizona, he appeared in 25 games, making 79 receptions for 984 yards and 6 touchdowns.

In his final college season in 2023, McLachlan was awarded Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 after logging 45 receptions for 528 yards and 4 touchdowns. His time at Arizona culminated in setting the school record for most receptions by a tight end, surpassing the previous record held by Rob Gronkowski.

Before his U.S. collegiate career, McLachlan attended Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in Alberta, where he earned All-Canadian honors as a wide receiver. Initially committed to playing basketball at the University of Lethbridge, he shifted his focus to football and moved to Arizona for an additional year of high school at American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Exhibits high football IQ and versatility, impacting games on special teams and multiple offensive positions.
  • Effective at exploiting defensive gaps, showcasing sharp field awareness to maximize yardage on plays.
  • Competitive drive evident in aggressive play style; excels in extending plays and fighting through contact.
  • Reliable hands with an innate ability to adjust to off-target throws, underscoring his receiver roots.
  • Utilizes build-up speed effectively in routes and after the catch, turning short gains into decent yardage.
  • Capable blocker in space, using lateral agility to secure cut-offs and effectively engage second-level defenders.
  • Basketball background translates into superior body control and leverage in congested red-zone scenarios.
  • Demonstrates resilience, overcoming significant injuries to maintain high-performance levels.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Block consistency needs improvement; struggles with hand placement and sustaining engagement against power rushers.
  • Lacks ideal frame and reach for a prototypical in-line tight end, affecting blocking efficacy in tight spaces.
  • Route precision requires refinement; tends to round off routes which can telegraph movements to defenders.
  • Needs to enhance positioning and timing in contested catches to improve reliability in critical down situations.
  • Underdeveloped footwork in blocking stances, necessitating further coaching to optimize blocking leverage and effectiveness.
Scouting Report: Summary
Tanner McLachlan enters the NFL draft as a hybrid tight end whose receiving chops are clearly his calling card, but whose blocking acumen remains a work in progress. With reliable hands and the ability to make plays after the catch, McLachlan brings a receiver's skill set to the tight end position. He demonstrates the ability to find soft spots in zone coverage and has the catch radius to haul in off-target throws. However, his transition to the NFL demands enhancements in inline blocking where his lack of ideal size and inconsistent hand placement are liabilities against pro-caliber defensive ends and linebackers.

McLachlan's fit at the next level could see him utilized more as an F-tight end or move tight end in schemes that prize mismatch creation over traditional blocking duties. His ability to contribute immediately on special teams and his potential in pass-heavy sets offer immediate value. Nonetheless, to carve out a more substantial role, he'll need to refine his route running and bolster his physicality at the point of attack.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
