Ryan Watts from Little Elm High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Watts opted to join Ohio State after being heavily recruited.In 2020 as a freshman Watts saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 28 snaps at cornerback for the Buckeyes. He recorded just 3 tackles, no assists, while adding no stops. In coverage Watts notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 93.1.
As a sophomore in 2021 he played in 6 games and logged 120 snaps for the Buckeyes. He made just 5 tackles, one assist, and had 2 stops. In coverage he totaled no pass breakups, 2 interceptions, and an elite QB rating when targetted of 47.9.
After season's end Watts transferred to Texas where as a junior for the Longhorns in 2022 Watts played in 12 games and took part in 728 snaps for the Longhorns. - Watts tracks the ball well and does a nice job of getting his head around in plenty of time to avoid flags.
- Tracks the ball well and has the natural ball skills for forcing turnovers.
- Good agility and balance when shadowing his target. Competitive player.
- In the run game, he’s aggressive coming downhill and a sure tackler.
- Has the quick feet to mirror receivers underneath. He also has the fluid hips and top-end speed to turn and run downfield. Watts shows good awareness when dropping into zone coverage, with good route recognition and the ability to break quickly and cover a lot of ground.
- Very aggressive attacking receiver blocks and tackles like a safety.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Gets sloppy with his backpedal when playing off-man and seems to lack the instincts to close on the ball.
- Needs to develop a better understanding of route combinations and better overall vision.
- Opens his hips too early and allows himself to get turned around in coverage.
