Draft Profile: Bio
Power Echols established himself as a key defensive playmaker for the North Carolina Tar Heels, earning Third-Team All-ACC honors in 2023 and Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition in 2022. The Charlotte native arrived in Chapel Hill as a highly touted four-star recruit, ranked among the top 160 players nationally by major recruiting services. Echols made an immediate impact, appearing in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2021.In his sophomore campaign, Echols started all 14 games and recorded 103 tackles, including 70 solo stops, two sacks, and five tackles for loss. He also added an interception, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. His 70 solo tackles ranked fifth among Power 5 defenders. As a junior in 2023, Echols maintained his high level of production with 102 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and an interception.
Echols comes from an athletic family, with his father Brian having played football at Michigan State and in the NFL, while his mother Astarlove was a standout basketball player at Western Michigan. This pedigree likely contributed to Echols' impressive high school career at Chambers High School (formerly Vance), where he amassed 389 tackles, 28 sacks, and 11 forced fumbles over three years, earning multiple defensive player of the year honors.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Exceptional sideline-to-sideline range, allowing him to make plays all over the field and excel in pursuit situations
- Displays impressive closing burst when attacking the line of scrimmage or chasing down ball carriers in space
- Aggressive playing style with a high motor, consistently looking to make an impact and finish plays with physicality
- Exhibits good instincts and play recognition, particularly against the run, allowing him to diagnose plays quickly
- Versatile defender with experience in various coverage assignments, including man-to-man on running backs and tight ends
- Effective blitzer with the quickness to shoot gaps and create pressure in the backfield
- Shows potential in zone coverage with solid awareness and the ability to read quarterback's eyes
- Special teams experience across multiple units, increasing his value as a potential core contributor in that phase
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Undersized for a traditional NFL linebacker, which can lead to struggles when taking on blocks from offensive linemen
- Lacks ideal play strength at the point of attack, sometimes getting overwhelmed by larger blockers in the run game
- Tackling technique needs refinement, as he tends to rely on his athleticism rather than proper form, leading to missed tackles
- Can be overaggressive at times, biting on play action or misdirection and leaving his assigned gap responsibilities
- Limited length may hinder his ability to consistently defeat blocks and make plays in traffic at the next level
Scouting Report: Summary
A high-motor second-level defender with the range and athleticism to contribute in multiple phases. Thrives in space where his closing speed and aggressive mentality allow him to make impact plays. Coverage upside is evident, with the fluidity to match up man-to-man and the awareness to operate in zone schemes.Size limitations will likely push him into a specialized role early in his career. Best fit as a WILL in a 4-3 or as a nickel linebacker in sub-packages where his coverage skills and blitzing ability can be maximized. Has the tools to develop into a three-down player if he can add functional strength without sacrificing his movement skills.
Special teams value cannot be overstated, as his experience and motor project him as an immediate core-four contributor. Development track will hinge on his ability to play bigger than his size against the run and refine his technique as a tackler.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
