Draft Profile: Bio
Kyle Monangai, a 5'9", 207-pound running back from Rutgers, has emerged as one of the Big Ten's most productive rushers. Born on March 15, 2002, the New Jersey native made his mark at Don Bosco Prep before joining the Scarlet Knights in 2020. As a three-star recruit, Monangai flew under the radar but quickly proved his worth in Piscataway.

Monangai's college career took off in 2023 when he led the Big Ten with 1,262 rushing yards, becoming Rutgers' first 1,000-yard rusher since 2012. His breakout junior campaign earned him First Team All-Big Ten honors from Pro Football Focus and Second Team recognition from coaches and media. Monangai's durability and productivity were evident as he started all 13 games, averaging 97 yards per contest and finding the end zone eight times on the ground.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Exceptional vision and patience to find creases in the defense, consistently making the right reads behind the line of scrimmage
  • Powerful lower body allows him to break tackles and gain yards after contact, turning potential losses into positive gains
  • Demonstrates good ball security, rarely putting the ball on the ground despite a heavy workload
  • Solid pass protector who shows willingness and technique to pick up blitzing linebackers
  • Durable runner who can handle a bell-cow role.
  • Shows burst through the hole and ability to get to the second level quickly
  • Reliable hands out of the backfield, providing a safety valve for quarterbacks under pressure
  • High football IQ and work ethic, as demonstrated by his academic accolades and steady improvement each season
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks elite top-end speed to consistently break off long runs at the next level
  • Below-average size for an NFL running back, which may limit his effectiveness in short-yardage situations
  • Not a natural separator in the passing game, limiting his third-down value in spread offenses
  • Can improve on creating yards when plays break down, sometimes relying too heavily on designed runs
  • May struggle to replicate college production against faster, more disciplined NFL defenses
Scouting Report: Summary
Kyle Monangai projects as a solid complementary back in a committee approach at the next level. His vision, toughness, and ability to grind out tough yards make him an attractive option for teams employing a power-running scheme. While he may not have the breakaway speed to be a featured back, Monangai's well-rounded skill set and high football IQ should allow him to contribute early in his career.

Schematically, Monangai would fit best in an offense that utilizes zone-blocking concepts, allowing him to use his patience and vision to find cutback lanes. His pass-blocking acumen and reliable hands also make him a candidate for third-down work, though he'll need to improve his route-running to fully capitalize on passing-down opportunities.

With his productivity, leadership, and steady improvement trajectory, Monangai has the potential to outperform his draft position and become a valuable rotational piece in an NFL backfield. His durability and consistent production against Big Ten competition bode well for his ability to handle the rigors of the pro game.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
