Draft Profile: Bio
A hometown hero from Lawrence, Kansas, Devin Neal has been a cornerstone of the Jayhawks' offense since his freshman year. The 5'11", 210-pound back has steadily improved each season, culminating in a breakout junior campaign that saw him rush for over 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns. Neal's journey from local high school star to Big 12 standout is a testament to his work ethic and natural ability.

Neal burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2021, becoming the first Kansas freshman to ever win Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. His sophomore season saw him eclipse the 1,000-yard mark, highlighted by a monster performance against Oklahoma State where he rushed for 224 yards and added 110 receiving yards. Neal's junior year has been his most impressive yet, averaging over 6 yards per carry and finding the end zone with regularity.

Throughout his college career, Neal has racked up numerous accolades, including multiple All-Big 12 selections and appearances on the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award watch lists. His consistent production and big-play ability have made him a fan favorite in Lawrence and a player to watch for NFL scouts.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • He’s a natural pass catcher, at his best pulling in swing passes and heading upfield. He’s a natural in the screen game as well. His hands are good enough that Neal can line up in the slot.
  • Neal often thrived in the screen game, transitioning upfield quickly and showing a knack for following his blocks. He has the size and strength to pass protect.
  • He has the athleticism, quick feet and functional strength to set the edge and open running lanes.
  • His passing game skills are strong. He’s a natural hands catcher who turns upfield quickly in the screen game, and he shows a great feel for setting up wheel routes.
  • His vision is outstanding, and he has an innate understanding of when to go and when to sit back and wait for blocks to develop. Neal thrives as a one-cut back
  • He’s extremely dangerous in the open field, showing the vision and creativity to run through entire defenses.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Slightly undersized frame may limit his effectiveness as an every-down back at the NFL level
  • Not a dominant power runner, may struggle to consistently move the pile in short-yardage situations
  • Pass protection skills need refinement, could be a liability in blitz pickup early in his NFL career
  • Limited route tree as a receiver, primarily used on screens and dump-offs in college
  • May need to improve lower body strength to withstand the rigors of the pro game
Scouting Report: Summary
Neal projects as a dynamic change-of-pace back at the next level, with the potential to develop into a more significant role. His skill set is best suited for a zone-blocking scheme that can take advantage of his vision and one-cut ability. While he may not be an immediate three-down workhorse, Neal's explosiveness and versatility make him an intriguing prospect for teams looking to add a spark to their backfield.

NFL coordinators will be drawn to Neal's big-play potential and his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game. His experience in a power-five conference and consistent production against top-tier competition bode well for his transition to the pro game. While he may need to bulk up slightly to handle the physicality of the NFL, Neal's natural instincts and playmaking ability give him a solid foundation to build upon.

As the draft approaches, expect Neal to generate buzz as a potential day-two selection. His combination of college production, athletic upside, and minimal wear and tear make him an attractive option for teams looking to inject youth and explosiveness into their running back room.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
