Draft Profile: Bio
Charleston Rambo was in such demand from big schools he committed to Oklahoma before his senior season he received AP Class 6A All-State honors after logging 1,590 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. He was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN, Rivals, and Scout and a three-star prospect by 247Sports, additionally Rated as the No. 97 player in the country by Rivals, No. 190 by Scout, No. 203 by ESPN.Rambo spent the first four seasons of his career at Oklahoma and saw action in 36 games - making 24 starts over course of his career. He totaled 76 catches, 1,180 receiving yards, and nine receiving touchdowns. He had the best season of his Oklahoma career in 2019 and finished with 43 catches, 743 yards, and five touchdown receptions.
After his Sooner career didn't live up to the high expectations he had Rambo transferred to Miami for 2021 and made an outstanding contribution. He earned second-team All-ACC recognition after starting all 12 games and led Hurricanes in catches (79), receiving yards (1,172), and receiving touchdowns (seven). In the process, he set school records for single-season receptions and single-season receiving yards and finished with six 100-yard receiving games.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Has smooth acceleration and deceiving speed. Balanced and very fast with the ball in his hands.
- Has a well-developed route tree and little wasted motion and sharp cuts
- At 6-1 and 180 lbs Rambo can play both the slot and outside. He's shifty and smart and has a knack for finding gaps in zone coverage
- Incredibly productive receiver at Miami where he quickly became their most important offensive weapon
- Balanced, savvy route runner with top field awareness, setting up and selling routes beautifully.
- Shows quickness off the snap to shake off corners and create room. Separates with hesitation moves and nice acceleration.
- Has no fear going over the middle - willing to take the big hit
- An exciting runner in the screen game - very sudden and elusive
- Really upped his value at the Shrine game where he dominated the practices and came up with some impressive catches
- Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
- Accepts the ball fluidly on most throws and is ready to make a play afterward. Makes some good catches in traffic, even going up over taller defenders
- Dispalys excellent timing - good at avoiding the jam and quickly gets to top speed. Good understanding for the nuances of the game with high football IQ
- He gets off the line with a nice burst and has loose hips and is very fluid in his movements with little wasted steps in his routes.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Doesn't have elite athletic traits - is neither particularly fast nor big/tall. Will be viewed as a bit of a tweener
- Despite playing both out wide and slot in Miami - will be viewed as a pure slot guy in the NFL due to his lean frame
- Doesn't have the top-end speed to be viewed as a deep threat - will be primarily used as a short and intermediate target
- Was plagued by drops at Oklahoma and although he improved significantly at Miami he still had concentration drops
- Not aggressive enough at the catch point - can be out-muscled for the ball. Needs to play harder
- Is a skilled blocker who gets involved when he can - although size limitations reduce his overall effectiveness
- Lacks ideal size and strength and is a smallish target with a lean, frail-looking frame. Can be overmatched at the line of scrimmage when physical defenders get their hands on him. Struggles in press coverage and was knocked on his back more than a few times.
- Doesn't have the size to consistently win on the outside, but can be productive working the middle of the field
Scouting Report: Summary
Charleston Rambo is a solid NFL prospect who projects as a third receiver at the next level. He demonstrated he could consistently dominate at the college level with an outstanding 2021 season for the Hurricanes, he, however, has limited athletic upside possessing a slight frame and having limited long speed (4.57 in the 40) means he will struggle to be viewed as a starter in the pros.Expect Rambo to be selected no earlier than the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft - and to carve himself a nice career as a reliable nickel/backup player.
