What Canadian Football Fans Follow When The 2026 NFL Draft Ends

The Los Angeles Chargers took the Miami defensive lineman from Ottawa 22nd overall, and The Canadian Press report on the pick counted him as the sixth Canadian-born first-rounder and the first defender among them.

For a Canadian fan, the last pick on April 25 opened a second schedule instead of closing one. The CFL ran its own draft three days later, NFL camps spent the summer deciding which Canadians stayed south, and CFL clubs have started claiming rights to college quarterbacks who will not reach the NFL Draft until 2027. The 113th Grey Cup will close that schedule in Calgary on November 15.

The CFL Drafted Around The NFL's Choices

The Canadian Draft filled eight rounds that evening, and the Global Draft for international players followed the next afternoon instead of sharing the night. Clubs chose 74 players in the Canadian rounds, 29 of them out of the NCAA and 45 out of U SPORTS programs.

NFL contracts rearranged the CFL Scouting Bureau's final rankings. Mesidor had led all three editions of the bureau's list, with offensive lineman Logan Taylor second. NFL teams had just drafted both, and no CFL club spent a pick on either. Ottawa opened the night with Giordano Vaccaro, 11th on the final list.

Rohan Jones, a tight end from Montreal, signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent, and 3DownNation expected that contract to drop him into the middle rounds. Montreal took him eighth overall anyway, while Rene Konga, third in the final rankings and headed to the Miami Dolphins, lasted until Ottawa took him 48th.

The Elks had earned a bonus second-round pick, 19th overall, for giving national players the league's highest share of snaps in 2025. Edmonton spent it on defensive lineman Wesley Bailey of Ottawa, who had just signed with the Rams.

Ten of the 18 Global Draft picks were kickers or punters, starting with Ottawa's selection of South African punter Aidan Laros. Edmonton and Calgary followed with kickers out of Mexico and Ireland.

Cutdown Weekend Decided Who Came North

A CFL club that drafts a Canadian with an NFL contract is buying the second chance at that player. He cannot report while the NFL deal runs, so the pick sits idle, and a pick that sits idle costs the club nothing beyond the pick itself.

Konga received a reported $287,500 in guaranteed money from Miami, according to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson. That sum equals about 4.5% of the $6,330,514 salary cap 3DownNation reported for each CFL team in 2026. No CFL club can match an offer like that, so clubs hold the rights and wait.

CFL camps opened in May without the draftees who had NFL deals, while those players worked through minicamps and preseason games. Jones played in all three of the Rams' preseason games and made one special-teams tackle before the club waived him at the end of camp.

Montreal collected a month later, when the Alouettes announced a three-year deal with Jones that runs through 2028. They had held his rights since the draft, and the wait cost them nothing. The tight end who ran a 4.72-second forty and jumped a 32.5-inch vertical is now theirs to develop.

TSN counted 28 Canadians who stayed south on NFL 53-man rosters after cutdown day on August 30. Mesidor made the list, now carried as an outside linebacker rather than on the defensive line.

The Field Moves Toward NFL Measurements In 2027

Those Global Draft kickers joined a league that had already rewritten its kicking rules. The CFL announced the changes on September 22, 2025, and split them across two seasons. The league's explainer on the changes says the phased approach gives teams and stadiums time for the structural work, which is why the goalposts and field lines wait until 2027.

The 35-second clock drops back to 20 seconds in the final three minutes of each half. The league's own example shows what the 2027 layout does to a kicker: from an opponent's 35-yard line, a 42-yard field goal becomes a 57-yarder.

Those 15 yards come from the posts themselves. They move off the goal line and onto the back of an end zone 15 yards deep, so every attempt is measured from 15 yards further out than the kicker is standing. The league office projects 60 more touchdowns once every structural change is in place, 3DownNation reported.

The CFL is moving toward the field an NFL scouting report already assumes, with posts on the end line and less ground between an offense and the end zone. Kicker range and red-zone catching should translate more directly than they did on 110 yards.

Football Canada and U SPORTS told 3DownNation they will not adopt the 2027 dimensions, so the university game keeps the old field. University coaches had told the CFL they preferred 110 yards, and replacing stitched turf would cost an estimated $1 million to $2 million per program.

A U SPORTS player drafted in 2027 will go from a 110-yard college field to a 100-yard pro field in his first camp. He will also arrive at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, which the Stampeders share with a university program, to find the only field likely to switch between the two layouts without much trouble, because its lines are painted rather than stitched.

Alberta's Clubs Played Through A New Online Market

The Elks trailed 25-7 at McMahon on Labour Day and won 38-28, then beat Calgary 53-16 at home five days later to clinch their first playoff berth since 2019. Edmonton is 10-3, while the Stampeders, whose stadium hosts the Grey Cup this year, sit last in the West Division at 5-8.

Both clubs played most of that season inside a new market. Clubs can add, trade or drop names at any time, and a listed player can only force his way off by asking for a minimum contract offer that the club then fails to make. The board therefore reads two years ahead of the NFL's.

Calgary made its latest claims on the day of the Labour Day rematch, adding quarterbacks Owen McCown and Conner Weigman, both eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft. Edmonton listed Tayven Jackson two days later. A draft board will rank all three passers this fall.

Toronto added 6-foot-9 Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete a day after Saskatchewan dropped his rights. The Cowboys waived him three days later, which put a player one club had just given up on back into play, under new rights, inside a week.

Dohnte Meyers went the other way. A receiver who paid $100 to attend a Roughriders open tryout, he caught 65 passes for 1,056 yards in his second CFL season, won the 112th Grey Cup and then made the Cincinnati Bengals' 53-man roster on cutdown day.

Calgary Hosts The Last Grey Cup On The Old Field

The Grey Cup returns to Calgary for the first time since 2019. CBC Calgary's festival preview lists four days of events leading into the 113th Grey Cup at McMahon. Organizers expect up to 350,000 fans at the festival, and Tourism Calgary puts the economic impact at $50 million.

If the league's plan holds, it will be the last Grey Cup played with goalposts on the goal line. The 114th Grey Cup goes to Regina in 2027, on a 100-yard field, and 3DownNation reported that the stadium there will get new turf before that season.

Next year's calendar also reverses the order draft followers know. The CFL Draft will be held April 13, 2027, with rookie camps eight days later, and the season will open on the Victoria Day weekend, its earliest start ever, with eight of nine teams reaching a three-round playoff. The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 29 through May 1, so CFL clubs will pick their Canadians first.

The CFL Scouting Bureau's first 2027 rankings put LSU defensive back Ty Benefield at No. 1, and 3DownNation noted he is widely seen as a potential Day 2 NFL pick, which could lower his CFL stock the way an NFL contract lowered Mesidor's. Ryan Hughes is the only U SPORTS player in the top 20.

On the NFL side, NFL Draft Buzz ranked Montreal's Antwan Raymond of Rutgers as the eighth-best draft-eligible running back and 108th overall, with a scouting report that calls him a workhorse back.

Raymond rushed for 1,241 yards in 2025 and won the Jon Cornish Award as the top Canadian in NCAA football. He can return to Rutgers in 2027 if he passes on the 2027 board, and a club holding a pick would then be the one deciding whether to wait him out.
