NFL Week 2 Picks and Odds 2026: Lions, Saints and Commanders

Buffalo and Baltimore won their openers, but backing a winner and backing a team to cover are different decisions. The early NFL Week 2 picks here take the points with Detroit, New Orleans and Washington. Lions at Bills opens the week on Thursday, September 17, before Sunday's games and the Monday night finale.

When comparing Bitcoin sportsbooks for these games, check the spread and the price together. Detroit +4.5 at -115 is not the same wager as Detroit +3 at -110. The selections below depend on getting the stated number, not simply finding a book that lists the game.

Lions at Bills pick: Detroit +4.5

Thursday, September 17, 8:15 p.m. ET
Pick: Lions +4.5 at -115 | Game total: 53.5

Detroit’s route to staying competitive starts with its running game and a balanced offense. AI-generated editorial illustration.

Detroit has a way to stay competitive without asking Jared Goff to match Josh Allen throw for throw. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries against New Orleans. Goff finished with 206 passing yards, so the Lions had a productive ground game even when the passing attack was not doing the heavy lifting.

That gives Detroit options. Jahmyr Gibbs' scouting report highlighted his speed and receiving ability coming out of Alabama. If Buffalo gets ahead, the Lions do not have to remove their most dangerous runner to throw the ball. Keeping him involved on early downs is a better route to covering than repeatedly asking Goff to rescue third-and-long.

The obvious concern is Detroit's secondary. Allowing Tyler Shough to throw for 410 yards is a poor warm-up for Allen, who opened with 334 passing yards and four total touchdowns in Buffalo's 36-31 win over Houston. Detroit cannot afford to keep giving up completions behind its linebackers and expect the running game to solve everything.

The short turnaround also makes the Lions depth chart worth checking for changes up front. A running game that worked on Sunday does not automatically travel intact to Thursday. This pick assumes Detroit can keep its offense balanced rather than spending the second half chasing a large deficit.

The bet: Detroit +4.5 at -115 or better. At +3.5, I would want -110 or better. At +3, I would pass. Buffalo can win this game by a field goal and the Lions can still be the right spread pick.

Saints at Ravens pick: New Orleans +8.5

Sunday, September 20, 1 p.m. ET
Pick: Saints +8.5 at -115 | Game total: 47.5

Baltimore deserves to be favored. The Ravens produced 506 yards in their 41-23 win over Indianapolis, with Lamar Jackson throwing for 324 yards and Derrick Henry running for 144 and three touchdowns. This is not an argument that New Orleans suddenly has the better team.

It is an argument for taking more than a touchdown with an offense that showed it could recover from a bad start. Shough threw for 410 yards in Detroit, and Chris Olave caught 10 passes for 182 yards. New Orleans erased a 21-point deficit before losing in overtime. The useful part for this matchup is the ability to move the ball when the opponent knows a pass is coming.

There is a clear catch: Shough also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Tyler Shough's draft profile identified both his ability to attack downfield and concerns about his mechanics under pressure. Baltimore is a demanding test of that second part. The Saints need enough clean possessions to prevent Henry from spending the afternoon protecting a comfortable lead.

Zay Flowers also left the Colts game with a hamstring injury. His practice participation matters more than guessing his availability on Monday, and Baltimore's receiver depth chart gives a useful overview of the alternatives. The Saints pick does not assume Flowers will miss the game.

The bet: New Orleans +8.5 at -115 or better. Keep the full number rather than following it down to +7.5. A Baltimore win by eight points would still cash +8.5; it would lose at +7.5.

Commanders at Cowboys pick: Washington +3.5

Sunday, September 20, 4:25 p.m. ET
Pick: Commanders +3.5 at -110 | Game total: 50.5

Washington’s quarterback mobility tests Dallas’ ability to keep the play inside the pocket. AI-generated editorial illustration.

Dallas has more to fix than its 28-20 opening loss suggests. The Giants outgained the Cowboys 394 yards to 244 and held the ball for 36:40. Jaxson Dart completed 79.3% of his passes, threw three touchdowns and added 54 rushing yards. Those are specific problems for a defense about to face another quarterback who can run.

The mobility described in Jayden Daniels' scouting report is central to the Washington case. Dallas needs to pressure him without leaving easy escape routes. If its rush loses contain, Daniels has a way to extend drives even when the first read is covered. That makes Washington more appealing than a generic argument about division games being close.

There is no reason to pretend the Commanders played a complete offensive game against Philadelphia. After their opening field goal, they managed only 13 yards over their next four possessions. Their late rally made the final score 24-22, but the slow start remains a concern. Another extended dry spell would give Dak Prescott too many chances to build a lead.

Still, Dallas has not shown enough defensive control to make laying more than a field goal attractive here. The Commanders depth chart is useful for checking the supporting cast, but the main matchup is straightforward: can the Cowboys keep Daniels in the pocket more effectively than they contained Dart?

The bet: Washington +3.5 at -110 or better. The half-point above three is important. At +3, this would no longer be one of my early picks.

Two more Week 2 lines to watch

Browns at Buccaneers: do not chase Tampa Bay past a touchdown

Tampa Bay was listed at -7.5 in the September 14 odds check. At that number, a seven-point home win is not enough. The temptation is to decide the Buccaneers should win and stop there, but the margin is the actual bet. I would reconsider Tampa Bay at -6.5 at a reasonable price; that is a target for a fresh assessment, not a claim that -6.5 is currently available. At -7.5, this stays off the card.

Jaguars at Broncos: wait for Denver to finish Week 1

Jacksonville was +2.5 for its trip to Denver in the same odds check. At the time of this September 14 preview, Denver's Monday night opener at Kansas City had not been played. There is no need to commit before seeing how the Broncos come through that game. Their injury situation and the price afterward matter more than filling another space on an early picks list.

Player props: watch the workload before buying the headline

Gibbs' receiving yards and Daniels' rushing yards are markets worth comparing when the Week 2 lines are posted. Neither is an extra pick without a number and a price. Gibbs' 29 carries on Sunday do not guarantee the same workload on a short week, while Dallas has a chance to change how it handles quarterback runs.

Olave is another name to watch, but buying a yardage over purely because he just gained 182 is a weak reason to bet. Check the receiving line, the expected coverage and whether the price still leaves room for a less spectacular game. A good performance can make the next wager more expensive, not more attractive.

The number is part of the pick

The early choices are Detroit +4.5, New Orleans +8.5 and Washington +3.5. Washington's matchup with the Dallas defense is the most appealing of the three to me, but only with the half-point above a field goal. None is a bet to follow regardless of the line.

Keep the stakes modest while the season's evidence is still limited. A team can fix a Week 1 problem, and an impressive opening result can flatter it. There is no obligation to replace a pick that loses its price, add a large favorite to a parlay or increase the next stake after a loss.

The official NFL Week 2 schedule has the full slate from September 17 through September 21, including Giants at Rams on Monday night. Check kickoff times, the latest injury information and the actual bet slip before placing a wager.
