How the NFL is Becoming a Crypto-Friendly League

The NFL Draft is a game determined by inches and seconds, where prospects are evaluated based on their twitch, processing speed as well as their ability to follow through on a play.

Now that same demand for elite velocity has found its way into the front office and fan experience.

In recent years, the NFL has shifted its stance on crypto, which was previously strucly banned. Now, it's allowed a controlled level of incorporation, with a strong focus on high-level partnerships and blockchain-backed fan experiences. Strategic sponsorships, instant withdrawal crypto casino enabled betting and player investment trends have become the new normal in the once outlawed landscape.

High-Level Partnerships and Sponsorships

In 2022, the NFL amended its policy to permit teams to enter into blockchain sponsorships. Although any direct promotion of specific cryptocurrencies is still prohibited, crypto-adjacent deals are taking center stage.

The Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys became the first team to enter into a crypto sponsorship in the league and this sponsorship has subsequently led to the publishing of a math book that uses football to explain finance and crypto fundamentals to children.

International Expansion

The NFL's Global Markets program has also facilitated deals with crypto brands, designating a crypto-based site as the official NFL partner in Europe and the UK for both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The New Crypto Paycheck Trend

A growing number of football athletes have started bypassing traditional banking in favor of receiving their paychecks in digital assets. Some high-profile examples include:

  • Russel Okung, who was the first to move and converted half of his $13 million salary to Bitcoin in 2020. By late 2024, that investment has reportedly grown to around $21 million.
  • Odell Beckham Jr. converted his entire 2021 Rams salary ($750k) into Bitcoin. As of August 2025, that amount was valued at over $1.4 million.
  • Trevor Lawrence reportedly placed a portion of his signing bonus into a crypto investment portfolio.

These athletes are just a few of the many footballers who have chosen crypto investments over bank-guaranteed cheques, reflecting a growing trend of younger athletes who prefer digital-first financing solutions.

The Blockchain's Influence on Fan Engagement

Crypto has even found its way into the NFL fan experience, too, as the league has started implementing blockchain as a way to solve logistical issues and intensify fan loyalty.

Some examples of crypto being incorporated into NFL fan experiences include:

  • The NFL's digital video collectibles (NFTs)
  • The Baltimore Ravens are exploring options for tokenized loyalty systems to reward fans
  • The Miami Dolphins are accepting Litecoin and Bitcoin as payment alternatives for game-day tickets and merchandise.

There have even been whispers regarding the possibility of tokenizing teams, which would essentially fragment ownership into digital shares. This is being considered as a way to help owners fund stadium repairs and contract guarantees without losing their majority control.

Instant Transactions for Fast-Paced Plays

The incorporation of crypto into the NFL should come as no surprise as there's been a global trend in recent years regarding large industries and corporations expanding their offerings to include digital payment solutions. The convenience and accessibility of cryptocurrencies have made them an ideal partner for global partners looking to expand their reach into a much wider demographic of users.

By amending regulations and facilitating brand partnerships with blockchain-based companies, the NFL has aligned itself with the demands of a mobile-first society that prefers online financial systems and the ease, speed and transparency offered by cryptocurrency-based transactions. And the increase in athletes migrating toward his payment method will likely only fuel its adoption. With this move, the NFL is no longer just watching the blockchain; it has officially scouted, drafted and started crypto in its first-team lineup.
