Will the NFL Draft Soon Come to Streaming Services?
For many fans, the NFL Draft is just as exciting as the football season itself. Along with trying to predict which teams will go for which players, it’s interesting to watch the selection process and to see if anyone tries to trade their positions.
The 2025 draft in Green Bay attracted 7.5 million viewers, highlighting how much of a huge draw it is. With streaming services now investing more heavily in live content, it may not be long before a major player swoops for the rights to the NFL Draft.
Streaming Platforms Are Investing Heavily in Live Content
Even though streaming services have always prided themselves on offering on-demand content, there has been a recent push towards live offerings. It’s clear that this is seen as the next frontier for streaming, and the different players have been fighting over the rights to host games from all sorts of competitions, including the NFL and MLB.
Netflix has shown how there’s an opportunity to break away from the norm and offer live content that hasn’t been available before. This recently included Skyscraper Live, which was a broadcast of Alex Honnold’s climb of Taipei 101 in real time. The company has also invested heavily in boxing and WWE, along with a range of other sports content. With this diversity on offer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Netflix try to bid for the NFL Draft in the future.
NFL Draft Is Already Compelling Entertainment
With the NFL Draft already attracting a vast number of viewers every year and being one of the most talked-about events in the football calendar, it has already established itself as compelling entertainment. This makes it an attractive prospect for streaming platforms, which could try to elevate it even more.
Along with hosting the draft, whichever streaming platform wins the rights to it could produce a whole host of other content surrounding the event. This could involve stories about the key players involved, along with documentaries focusing on past draft successes. By offering a range of different ways to get involved with the draft, it could help it reach a great number of viewers.
Adding Interactivity and Gaming Elements Could Boost It Even More
If a streaming service starts offering the NFL Draft, there’s the opportunity to add to to it with related games. This often happens with content on streaming services, which is expanded into different offshoots of entertainment to increase visibility. For example, various popular series like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones have been represented in slot games, designed to spark interest and encourage players to watch the series. There could be slots or mobile games that do the same thing for an NFL series.
On top of that, there could also be the option to add interactive elements to an NFL Draft show on Netflix or another platform. For example, there could be voting functions that give viewers a chance to say which player they would go for if they had a certain pick.
As it stands, the NFL Draft will still be available via the usual channels. However, it wouldn’t be surprising for a streaming platform to pick it up in the future and turn it into an even bigger event.
