Betting on NFL Teams- How Important Is Their Recent Draft History?

The NFL draft is all about the future. It is about young talent trying to bridge the gap between college football and the professional ranks by becoming regular starters for their new teams.

But the draft is also about change, not only in playing personnel down the line, but about a team’s structure. A potential future NFL starting quarterback picked high in the draft can fundamentally change how a team plays. So the draft becomes more about betting on just the name that is selected, and more about the bigger picture of the unit that the drafted piece will contribute to.

Measuring the high impact of leading draft players can provide useful insights into NFL futures. By definition, the draft is set up to introduce some parity across the board, and the deeper the knowledge of past drafts, the more it can help to indicate a team’s ceiling before the start of a new campaign. Simply put, whether looking for a “sleeper” team or validating your backing of a Super Bowl front-runner, analysing an NFL team’s recent draft history can be an important tool in your betting arsenal.

Maximizing the Edge

The goal of any NFL stats research is to maximize your edge when you hit the sportsbook. When placing wagers on a competitive NFL market, bettors in the USA will see line prices influenced by high volumes of bets that a sportsbook has taken. Taking a look at alternative international markets, such as those at the top European bookmakers, can put a different perspective on things. NFL line valuations at such sportsbooks won’t be as heavily influenced by the betting public, as interest in American football will be much less. That makes it interesting to see the details of how sportsbooks in different regions - for example, in Romania - really price up NFL lines, which are still, of course, an indication of a team’s draft-related upside.

The Cap is the Key

There’s a hard salary cap at play in the NFL, which makes rookie contracts highly covetable. Imagine that a team has snapped up a starting QB on an entry-level contract, and they will be a Day 1 starter come the new season. That’s a massive money saver for the franchise, which in turn can influence what they do in the trade market.

They could potentially surround the youngster with elite, veteran talent because of the room in the cap to work with. If, in turn, there’s a high production rate from players within the first three years of their contracts, this projects a very good future, especially heading into the year 2 jump.

Second Season Boost

Statistically, a player’s impact should increase significantly from their first to their second season, so it’s worth looking at recently drafted players who fit into this category. If a rookie defender played less than 50% of snaps during their first season, but returned some good stats in areas like “Pass Rush Win Rate”, then this indicates a positive future.

Sportsbooks will price up futures lines based on the previous season’s defensive performances and rankings. As a handicapper, you are looking for the potential of what second-season performance jumps can do for a team.

Assess Positional Value

It’s also important to look at what a team has been drafting in terms of positional values. If a team has gone for a Left Tackle and an Interior Defensive Lineman as their first two picks, then it indicates they are serious about their depth and future at the scrimmage. The positional players drafted in change the math and tactics about how a team will play. Looking for the less flashy, big defensive captures in drafts can be a tactical betting approach, as markets tend to overvalue teams that have loaded up on high-profile wide receivers.

Key Draft Pointers

Player Retention - How many of a team’s last 10 picks are still on the roster? A high number indicates good depth for when the mid-season injuries start to rack up.

Purpose - Has a team drafted a specific player to fit into an existing system? If so, a rookie will likely contribute quickly, as opposed to a high-quality player who’s likely a poor fit for the way a team plays.

Reactionary Moves - Has a team shifted their picks for “win now” established players? These are common moves by franchises expected to be in the postseason bracket, showing clear intention. Also, look at which teams have benefited in terms of gaining picks, and what they do with them, as it could be a good “sleeper” option in a couple of seasons.

Draft Literacy Equates Betting Literacy

Always look deeper. If a veteran signing has been snapped up, does that simply mean a team has failed to do any serious business in recent drafts to develop starting-calibre players? Or does a current veteran signing mean a team has good hidden depth, with rookies ready to go in case of injuries?

By studying the recent drafts for a team and looking at areas like how well a player fits on a roster and what their presence will mean tactically, you cut out some of the guesswork for your wagers. Acquiring draft knowledge, especially in predicting rookie powers, can help you assess a team’s potential ceiling.
