FutureA+
The Jets finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B+. The tape said wait; the Jets did not. Demon Clowney went at pick No. 254, a good 160 picks before the board was ready. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Beck. The whole projection now runs through Ty Simpson; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Spending an early pick on linebacker with interior defensive lineman and running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Ty Simpson
In No. 21 they get a passer to set the clock by, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick32
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In the 32nd overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Arvell Reese
Taking Arvell Reese in pick 36 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick44
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Sonny Styles in the Round 2 slot leaves interior defensive lineman and running back for later.
Pick56
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
They barely believed it either: Caleb Banks still on the board at pick No. 56. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick105
Rnd4
A.J. Haulcy
You do not let a safety like A.J. Haulcy reach the 105th pick and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick178
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
No edge and no loss on DJ Campbell in slot 178; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 192 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick202
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at pick 202 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick208
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick237
Rnd7
Lawson Luckie
Lawson Luckie in Round 7, Pick 23 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick253
Rnd7
Carson Beck
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Carson Beck in the 253rd pick, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Demon Clowney
They reached a country mile for Demon Clowney at the 254th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
