The Lions let Mbow fall into their laps, and walked away with a C. You could see the war room lean forward. Marcus Mbow at pick 244 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 28th pick they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick60
Rnd2
Grey Zabel
They will replay Grey Zabel at pick 60 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd3
Kenneth Grant
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Kenneth Grant reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jahdae Barron
Jahdae Barron in Round 4, Pick 28 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick149
Rnd5
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland at the 149th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick150
Rnd5
Josaiah Stewart
Josaiah Stewart in No. 150 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick155
Rnd5
Armand Membou
They barely believed it either: Armand Membou still on the board at slot 155. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick179
Rnd6
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick No. 179 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jack Bech
Steal is underselling it; Jack Bech at Round 6, Pick 20 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jaxson Dart
Circle this one: Jaxson Dart at the 228th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick239
Rnd7
Alfred Collins
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Alfred Collins in the 239th overall pick, plain and simple. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick244
Rnd7
Marcus Mbow
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Tre Harris
Somehow Tre Harris was still sitting there in No. 255, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The roster fit checks out.
