Grand theft in pick No. 232: the Colts steal Bowman Jr. and grade out a F. Somebody in No. 232 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Colts sat still while Billy Bowman Jr., the No. 112 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. There is no dressing it up: a F.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the 14th overall pick they get a matchup weapon at tight end. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick15
Rnd1
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in No. 15 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick16
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 16th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick52
Rnd2
Wyatt Milum
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 20 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67
Rnd3
Ashton Jeanty
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ashton Jeanty in pick 67, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in pick No. 74 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick115
Rnd4
Trey Amos
Taking Trey Amos in slot 115 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jihaad Campbell
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139
Rnd5
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon in No. 139 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick150
Rnd5
Darien Porter
You do not let a cornerback like Darien Porter reach pick 150 and blink. They did not. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick187
Rnd6
Mason Taylor
They barely believed it either: Mason Taylor still on the board at the 187th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232
Rnd7
Billy Bowman Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Billy Bowman Jr. at the 232nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
