Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Steelers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Eric Gentry at Round 6, Pick 34, a reach of 130 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Lawson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
Jordyn Tyson slipping to slot 21 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick49
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
By-the-book stuff, Dillon Thieneman at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick53
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 21 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick61
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe at pick 61 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Deontae Lawson at the 76th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick85
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malik Muhammad in pick No. 85. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick99
Rnd3
Deion Burks
A conviction pick on Deion Burks at the 99th pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick100
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Skyler Bell in pick No. 100. The roster fit checks out.
Pick135
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
No edge and no loss on Michael Trigg in Round 4, Pick 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick159
Rnd5
Drew Allar
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Drew Allar. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick196
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
They left a pile of value on the table to take Princewill Umanmielen this early at pick 196. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick207
Rnd6
Quintrevion Wisner
They went early on Quintrevion Wisner in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jordan Hall
They reached into another round for Jordan Hall, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry in the 215th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick224
Rnd7
Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun in slot 224 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick237
Rnd7
Nolan Rucci
They liked Nolan Rucci enough to skip the value, taking him in the 237th overall pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
