FutureA
The phones sank the Saints this weekend: D. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Saints started one anyway for Collin Oliver, 88 picks ahead of schedule.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. With tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Winston Jr..
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than No. 27, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in the 38th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick40
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 8. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at pick 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick59
Rnd2
Darien Porter
A premium they did not need to pay, Darien Porter a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick71
Rnd3
Deone Walker
The board had cheaper options than Deone Walker at the 71st overall pick, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Pick112
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety and leaves tight end untouched.
Pick122
Rnd4
Cody Simon
They took Cody Simon at par in the 122nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick145
Rnd5
Que Robinson
They reached a country mile for Que Robinson at pick No. 145, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick149
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at the 149th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick150
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 5, Pick 12 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick155
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Nice patience on Tyler Shough, who had no business lasting to No. 155. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jalen McLeod
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jalen McLeod well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick174
Rnd5
Clay Webb
Clay Webb at slot 174 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick184
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
Value said wait; Carson Vinson in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick186
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
They reached into another round for Tyler Batty, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick197
Rnd6
Davin Vann
A big swing on Davin Vann at Round 6, Pick 21, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick204
Rnd6
Collin Oliver
Collin Oliver at the 204th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Ethan Downs
A wild overpay on Ethan Downs in slot 211, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick212
Rnd6
Robert Longerbeam
A straight-up fair deal on Robert Longerbeam at pick 212, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jalen Travis this early at pick No. 239. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
