Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Dolphins bled value on every deal, hence the D. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Dolphins reached some 39 spots for Caden Curry, and value like that does not grow back.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 18th overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman is a better player than slot 43 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick49
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A quiet steal in pick 49: Emmanuel Pregnon for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick59
Rnd2
Devin Moore
Devin Moore in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at the 75th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Caden Curry
Caden Curry in Round 3, Pick 18 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick87
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
Mikail Kamara at No. 87 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick90
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
A curious use of pick 90. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Michael Taaffe did not.
Pick97
Rnd3
Treydan Stukes
A surprising call. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Treydan Stukes, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick116
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Davison Igbinosun, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick128
Rnd4
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at the 128th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129
Rnd4
Keagen Trost
They reached a country mile for Keagen Trost at pick No. 129, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149
Rnd5
Kaleb Elarms-Orr
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at Round 5, Pick 11 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick227
Rnd7
De'Zhaun Stribling
They talked themselves into De'Zhaun Stribling at the 227th overall pick, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
