Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
C+
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesC-
FutureB
Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Steelers: C+. There is reaching, and then there is Trey Holly at the Round 6 slot. The Steelers jumped the board by 44 and dared it to prove them wrong. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The Reid steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Pregnon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and cornerback. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
If Gennings Dunker and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick57
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 57, where Elijah Sarratt graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick76
Rnd3
Emmanuel Pregnon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Emmanuel Pregnon adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman and cornerback untouched.
Pick89
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
Skyler Bell in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick99
Rnd3
Diego Pavia
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Diego Pavia. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
A want over a need in pick 121: Charles Jagusah adds an offensive lineman while interior defensive lineman and cornerback keeps waiting.
Pick129
Rnd4
Boubacar Traore
Boubacar Traore at pick No. 129 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick136
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
A quiet steal in the 136th overall pick: Trinidad Chambliss for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick173
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol in Round 5, Pick 34 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick174
Rnd5
Bud Clark
They paid a round early for Bud Clark in pick 174, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick213
Rnd6
Trey Holly
Trey Holly in No. 213 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick214
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
They went early on Pat Coogan in slot 214, and the value did not follow. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick224
Rnd7
Hykeem Williams
Hykeem Williams at the 224th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Solomon Tuliaupupu
Solomon Tuliaupupu at the 237th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick241
Rnd7
Desmond Reid
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Desmond Reid in slot 241, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
