The Jets answered their biggest question with Mendoza. Grade: B. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Fernando Mendoza is the Jets' quarterback, full stop. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Getting Reese where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Hill Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
A reach for Fernando Mendoza in the Round 1 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick32
Rnd1
Christen Miller
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick35
Rnd2
Arvell Reese
They will replay Arvell Reese at pick No. 35 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick38
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 38th pick on Anthony Hill Jr. with edge rusher unsolved.
Pick46
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane in No. 46 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick103
Rnd4
Chandler Rivers
Chandler Rivers in slot 103 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick178
Rnd5
Evan Stewart
They paid up for Evan Stewart at pick 178 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick192
Rnd6
Taylen Green
They read the board right and Taylen Green was the payoff at the 192nd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick205
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bud Clark in the 205th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick207
Rnd6
Mark Fletcher Jr.
A tidy little value on Mark Fletcher Jr. in pick No. 207, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Pick239
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III is a better player than pick 239 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick254
Rnd7
Kayin Lee
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kayin Lee. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jordan White
Jordan White at Round 7, Pick 41 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
