Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
D+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureA+
Mendoza is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a D+. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Commanders, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
Fernando Mendoza gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. With interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They banked enough surplus on Slaughter to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In No. 9 they get a workhorse for the backfield at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kenyon Sadiq
A tidy bit of business in the 36th pick, where Kenyon Sadiq graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy is a better player than the 67th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Max Klare
Steal is underselling it; Max Klare at pick No. 74 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Zakee Wheatley, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick107
Rnd4
Caden Curry
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caden Curry. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham at the 117th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick120
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
A clean, defensible pick in slot 120 with a little surplus value in Tacario Davis. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick134
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
Hezekiah Masses in No. 134 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
Value with a capital V on CJ Daniels in the 139th overall pick, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick145
Rnd5
Kage Casey
A straight-up fair deal on Kage Casey at pick 145, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147
Rnd5
Louis Moore
Louis Moore in Round 5, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick158
Rnd5
Kyle Louis
A quiet steal in pick No. 158: Kyle Louis for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick174
Rnd5
Aaron Anderson
Nice patience on Aaron Anderson, who had no business lasting to the 174th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick176
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick183
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and DJ Campbell at Round 6, Pick 4 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Kaleb Elarms-Orr
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the 185th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick196
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
A tidy little value on Eric McAlister in No. 196, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick204
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They took Bud Clark at par in pick No. 204, which is nothing to complain about. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jadon Canady
Nothing to complain about; Jadon Canady went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dane Key
Dane Key at slot 219 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
They let Thaddeus Dixon come to them and pounced at pick 223. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick225
Rnd7
Keyshaun Elliott
Keyshaun Elliott at the 225th overall pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick236
Rnd7
DJ Harvey
The board had DJ Harvey higher than slot 236, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick239
Rnd7
TJ Hall
You do not let a cornerback like TJ Hall reach No. 239 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick241
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
Zavion Thomas slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 25 is lovely value for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
They read the board right and Diego Pavia was the payoff at the 248th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick254
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Trey Zuhn III worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
