The jury is out on the Steelers. For now, C+. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tony Rojas at the 121st overall pick is 153 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Altmyer steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
So much rides on Denzel Boston that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In slot 21 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Trinidad Chambliss
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trinidad Chambliss in the Round 2 slot, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Caden Curry
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Caden Curry. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jacob Rodriguez
They took Jacob Rodriguez at par in No. 95, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick99
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in Round 3, Pick 35 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
Demond Claiborne at pick 108 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121
Rnd4
Tony Rojas
A wild overpay on Tony Rojas in No. 121, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kage Casey
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kage Casey. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick159
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
The board had Ted Hurst higher than the 159th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick213
Rnd6
Luke Altmyer
They will replay Luke Altmyer at Round 6, Pick 34 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jerry Wilson
A tidy little value on Jerry Wilson in pick 214, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224
Rnd7
Ahmaad Moses
No edge and no loss on Ahmaad Moses in pick No. 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jason Henderson
A big swing on Jason Henderson at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
