A costly weekend of dealing drags the Steelers to a D+. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Steelers shredded theirs for Tyler Van Dyke. He came off 73 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Iheanachor pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker and tight end still on the board.
That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In pick No. 21 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick29
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a go-to option on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Connor Lew slid further than he should have, and No. 76 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick85
Rnd3
Julian Neal
Julian Neal is a better player than the 85th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch at pick 99 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick120
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
A conviction pick on DeMonte Capehart at slot 120 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick121
Rnd4
Eric Rivers
The board had cheaper options than Eric Rivers at Round 4, Pick 21, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Max Iheanachor adds an offensive lineman and leaves linebacker and tight end untouched.
Pick199
Rnd6
Desmond Reid
Desmond Reid in slot 199 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick213
Rnd6
Tyler Van Dyke
Tyler Van Dyke in the 213th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214
Rnd6
Isaac Smith
A straight-up fair deal on Isaac Smith at pick No. 214, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Ethan O'Connor
Ethan O'Connor at the Round 7 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick237
Rnd7
Keaten Wade
A big swing on Keaten Wade at the 237th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
