A solid, sensible weekend for the Lions: B. The Xavier Truss pick is the one that will follow the Lions into the fall. They took him 52 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
However the rest shakes out, Johnson at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In slot 30 they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick60
Rnd2
Will Johnson
Taking Will Johnson in pick No. 60 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 102nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick130
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
They reached into another round for Pat Bryant, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kobe King
Kobe King in Round 4, Pick 30 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196
Rnd6
Desmond Watson
They reached a country mile for Desmond Watson at No. 196, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed is a better player than the Round 6 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jalen McLeod
Jalen McLeod at pick No. 228 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick244
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Value said wait; Xavier Truss in the 244th pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
