FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Lew: B. Somebody in the 92nd overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Connor Lew, the No. 65 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting Durant proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In pick 30 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. A real need, handled.
Pick59
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Michael Taaffe in the 59th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick92
Rnd3
Connor Lew
The board fumbled Connor Lew all the way to slot 92, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Skyler Bell
A slide stopped in the 94th pick, with Skyler Bell worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick127
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
Fair-plus on Keylan Rutledge, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick133
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
They read the board right and J.C. Davis was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
You do not let a tight end like Michael Trigg reach pick No. 138 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick165
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst at No. 165 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd5
Zane Durant
Zane Durant at the 168th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick171
Rnd5
Marlin Klein
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marlin Klein. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick246
Rnd7
Cole Payton
Cole Payton is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
