FutureA-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Alexander: A-. The trade table was a mismatch, and the 49ers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
They banked enough surplus on Alexander to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Strong pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and edge rusher. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Every board in the league had Yarns lower, and that gap is the story.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Nick Emmanwori and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick44
Rnd2
Josh Conerly Jr.
Value with a capital V on Josh Conerly Jr. in slot 44, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick54
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at the 54th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick62
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins is a better player than No. 62 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 75th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at the Round 3 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at slot 113 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Dorian Strong adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and edge rusher untouched.
Pick148
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Good price on Malachi Moore in the 148th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick149
Rnd5
Mitchell Evans
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mitchell Evans. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
A reasonable price with a little left over, Luke Kandra in the Round 5 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. in pick No. 227 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick240
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in pick 240 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
They liked Teddye Buchanan enough to skip the value, taking him in the 249th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick252
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
They paid up for Marcus Yarns at No. 252 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
