Draft Grade — Chargers

FutureD
The Chargers let Higgins fall and pounced. Final grade: D-. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Chargers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Put together, it is a D-.
The cost of the Pegues reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Higgins falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
They took Abdul Carter at par in slot 3, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at Round 3, Pick 4, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Somehow Jayden Higgins was still sitting there in pick 90, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at No. 127 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick158
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
A tidy little value on O'Donnell Fortune in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick163
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They reached into another round for JJ Pegues, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick181
Rnd6
Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in the 209th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Caleb Ransaw
They read the board right and Caleb Ransaw was the payoff at No. 214. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
