Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB-
Mendoza is the Raiders' new face under center. Grade: B+. The Raiders treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 6 slot on Roman Hemby a full 85 spots early.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 2 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In pick 16 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt in Round 2, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick67
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
No drama and no debate, D'Angelo Ponds went about where he belonged in the 102nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick117
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
A straight-up fair deal on Keylan Rutledge at slot 117, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick134
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
A real head-scratcher, DJ Campbell in the 134th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at Round 5, Pick 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at pick 180 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick183
Rnd6
Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick219
Rnd7
Hykeem Williams
Hykeem Williams in slot 219 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
