The Raiders found their guy under center in Mendoza: D-. The phones were a trap the Raiders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
They have staked the next five years on Fernando Mendoza, which is the only story that really matters here. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
They will need Nwankpa to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Slaughter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 1 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick32
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In the 32nd pick they get a sticky cover corner at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles at the 36th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter in Round 2, Pick 32 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick67
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
Good price on Antonio Williams in No. 67, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick102
Rnd4
Carter Smith
The board had Carter Smith higher than pick 102, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 117 with a little surplus value in D'Angelo Ponds. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick174
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick182
Rnd6
Trinidad Chambliss
By-the-book stuff, Trinidad Chambliss at Round 6, Pick 1 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick185
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
The board had cheaper options than Xavier Nwankpa at pick 185, and it noticed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dane Key
Dane Key at the 219th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
